The Prom: Chapter Two

The day trudged on just like the morning, miserable. When she got home from school, she tossed her backpack into the corner next to her muddy rain boots and headed to the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of coke and sat down. Lililana enjoyed the silence of the house on these rainy afternoons. The pitter patter of the drops as they bounced off the window made her feel at peace. Once she finished her drink, she walked to the back of the house and went into her room. She flopped onto her bed and closed her eyes. She let her mind wander into outer space as she had many times before. There had been numerous occasions when she missed an important point a teacher said or had been yelled at because of her constant day dreaming. Lililana didn’t care that almost all of the kids at school though she was strange. She had one person’s full adoration, Grener. Just his presence made her turn into caramel syrup. His blue eyes twinkled as if they were diamonds and his voice floated from his mouth like a song from a bird. He was perfect and he was hers. That was all that mattered.

Lililana got up from her bed and went to her closet. She pulled out the periwinkle music box her mother gave her when she turned six. Being 18 now, the box seemed childish, but it was Lililana’s most treasured possession. She flipped the lock open, and the sweetest lullaby began to play. The song triggered a memory of her mother spinning around in circles as Lililana gazed at her beauty. She had green eyes and jet black hair, and she was lean and tall. Lililana longed to resemble her mother, but sadly, she looked like her father, Sam. She is a blond with mud eyes. She has her mothers height, but  is chubby. She often thought of herself as a hideous snake with a with a full rat belly. When she finally came to, she remembered what she was looking for. Inside the tiny box were three hundred dollar bills. It was the most money Lililana had ever had. She had been saving diligently since school had started that August. More than anything, Lililana wanted a new dress to wear to Prom that year. Grener had asked her to go, and she wanted nothing but to impress him. She was planning on going to Macy’s this weekend to buy a dress, but she had one problem, no car. Her sister got a pink BMW from her boyfriend for her sweet sixteen and then broke up with him the next day. Even though Lililana knew Selenia was deceitful, she envied her. All the kids at school liked her, and she was a photocopy of her mother, perfect in the eyes of everyone. Lililana had been planning to sweet talk her into driving her to the mall. After all, Selenia was an obsessive compulsive shopper. Lililana closed the music box and put it back into its undetectable place. She went over to her dresser and put the money in her Vera Bradley wallet. Seconds later the front door slammed. Selenia stomped into Lililana’s room and hurled her bag onto the floor. Lililana stood in silence because she knew when her sister was in a rage it is best to stay silent and listen to her vent.

“You will not believe what happened to me at drama club today. Luke Erickson is going to be Paris in Romeo and Juliet, and I have to marry him!” shouted Selenia. Lililana wasn’t sure whether or not to correct her, but she spoke up anyway.

“Um, Selenia, Juliet doesn’t end up marrying Paris.”

“Well of course I do! My Daddy Capulet is making me and I am not going to be a beggar!” Lililana just nodded her head in acceptance that no matter how many times she would say it, her sister would not understand that she doesn’t get to make up the play. Selenia went over to her sister’s dresser and began to glare at herself in the mirror. She never really admitted it, but Lililana thought she did this, so she could pretend that Monica was looking at her. The two sisters used to be very close, but after their mother died, they became Greenland and Iceland. Lililana coped by dreaming and thinking while Selenia dealed with her problems by throwing tantrums and dating every boy in the senior class (aside from Grener.) Selenia turned her attention back to Lililana and said,

“You feel like shopping sis?” Lililana was astonished! Selenia rarely asked her to do anything with her anymore. This was just the opportunity she was waiting for.

“Um, sure. That would be cool.” She responded.

“Excellent,” Selenia squealed, “meet me in my car in 5.” Lililana nodded in bafflement as her sister crossed the hall into her room. Lililana snatched up her wallet and sprinted to her sister’s hot pink BMW. The dress awaits!
