What Happened to Me @ Skealy High School

BANG BANG BANG! My eyes opened wide, my mouth stayed silent, and my books fell to the floor.

“Now, if you would care to stay awake for the rest of the lesson, Ms. Elizabeth Caldwell, you might pass the quiz you have to take.” it's always me who gets caught for this kind of stuff! That's what I get for having a perfect brother!

“Yes Mrs. Haggens.” I muttered. I leaned over and picked up my already broken algebra book off the floor. I swear, if I have to spend one more minute in this class, I am going to go insane. BRING BRING. Everyone rushed out of the classroom. As I made my way into the hall, I looked around for my best and only friend, Miranda. Now don’t go thinking I’m some loser wannabe now. I am friends with mostly everyone at our school, but Miranda Plankins is the only person in the world I can tell everything to, well, her and my pet rat Wimsy. I couldn’t find her, so I just figured she chose to stay at home again because she didn’t feel like taking the pop quiz we had in English.

I was rounding the corner when, BAM! I ran into the hottest guy at Skealy High School. Carter Michaelson. Dang, he is bringing sexy back! Not one part of him wasn't amazing: his perfect chocolate brown hair, green as grass eyes, and skin the color of caramel. Every girl at this school wanted him. Myself included.

“Sorry," he said. "I didn’t see you there.” Gah, even his voice sounded sweet.

“It’s okay,” I said, “but I’ll get you back!” He gave me that perfect white smile that came with his unforgettable laught and walked away. I was mesmerized. I was totally submerged in Carter shock until I heard a gut wrenching scream coming from the girls bathroom. I turned and saw Miranda running and shrieking like a prissy girl who just got pushed in mud. I made my way over to her and grabbed her by her bony shoulders.

                “What is going on?”

“Well, I went to put on my makeup, and when I opened my Urban Decay pallet, all the colors were broke! What the hell am I going to do now? That thing was fifty bucks! You know how long it took to come up with that money. Like three…….”

“First of all, shut up, don’t cuss, and calm down,” I said. It is so like her to make a major freak out over something stupid. “Secondly, why are you putting on your makeup at school? Didn’t you fix your face at home?”

“Well of course I did,” she replied, “but it was raining and it came off, so I had to do it again. Gah, I really got to get you some makeup. You need concealer, foundation,  eye shadow, mas……”

“Shut up girl! Now go back in there and fix your running mascara before the bell rings.” Then  I watched my chaotically awesome best friend run back to the place of smelly toilets and dirty sinks.

Coma: A Super Short Story

Coma

My head is swirling around. The ground is shifting back and forth, and the light of my eyes is switched off. Consciousness comes in cycles. People are yelling. I feel blood puddling up in my nose. I try to call out so someone, anyone who might hear me. My vocal chords are asleep. I lie there on that cold dark concrete wondering what in the world just happened to me.

I am conscious again. I still can’t see, but my ears seem to be working double time. I can hear everything: shoes clicking on the floor, people crying, and monitors beeping. I try to speak, but no sound comes out.

“Will she wake up?” It’s my mother’s voice.  I wonder who she is talking about. Then an unfamiliar voice sounds in the room.

“It’s hard to tell, but honestly, it doesn’t look likely.” Whoever they are talking about must have gotten hurt pretty badly. My mother’s sobbing takes over the room.

“My poor Louisa!” Oh dear God! They are talking about me! I try to move, to make some sort of motion. I lay still where I am. I can’t speak! My eyes won’t work! Help me! I am awake! Oh, dear God! What happened! Someone is coming near me. I can hear it. They stand over my head. I feel breath on my face. I try to move again. Nothing happens.

“She is in a deep coma. Some come out of them, some don’t.  Her brain is just trying to protect itself. When it feels safe, she’ll wake up.” The air stops coming, and the shoes go away. Why is this happening to me? I have to wake up. I am awake though aren’t I? It’s not my fault the rest of me doesn’t want to work. Come on brain! I am fine. Let me move! Let me communicate! Let me live!

The Prom: Chapter Two

The day trudged on just like the morning, miserable. When she got home from school, she tossed her backpack into the corner next to her muddy rain boots and headed to the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of coke and sat down. Lililana enjoyed the silence of the house on these rainy afternoons. The pitter patter of the drops as they bounced off the window made her feel at peace. Once she finished her drink, she walked to the back of the house and went into her room. She flopped onto her bed and closed her eyes. She let her mind wander into outer space as she had many times before. There had been numerous occasions when she missed an important point a teacher said or had been yelled at because of her constant day dreaming. Lililana didn’t care that almost all of the kids at school though she was strange. She had one person’s full adoration, Grener. Just his presence made her turn into caramel syrup. His blue eyes twinkled as if they were diamonds and his voice floated from his mouth like a song from a bird. He was perfect and he was hers. That was all that mattered.

Lililana got up from her bed and went to her closet. She pulled out the periwinkle music box her mother gave her when she turned six. Being 18 now, the box seemed childish, but it was Lililana’s most treasured possession. She flipped the lock open, and the sweetest lullaby began to play. The song triggered a memory of her mother spinning around in circles as Lililana gazed at her beauty. She had green eyes and jet black hair, and she was lean and tall. Lililana longed to resemble her mother, but sadly, she looked like her father, Sam. She is a blond with mud eyes. She has her mothers height, but  is chubby. She often thought of herself as a hideous snake with a with a full rat belly. When she finally came to, she remembered what she was looking for. Inside the tiny box were three hundred dollar bills. It was the most money Lililana had ever had. She had been saving diligently since school had started that August. More than anything, Lililana wanted a new dress to wear to Prom that year. Grener had asked her to go, and she wanted nothing but to impress him. She was planning on going to Macy’s this weekend to buy a dress, but she had one problem, no car. Her sister got a pink BMW from her boyfriend for her sweet sixteen and then broke up with him the next day. Even though Lililana knew Selenia was deceitful, she envied her. All the kids at school liked her, and she was a photocopy of her mother, perfect in the eyes of everyone. Lililana had been planning to sweet talk her into driving her to the mall. After all, Selenia was an obsessive compulsive shopper. Lililana closed the music box and put it back into its undetectable place. She went over to her dresser and put the money in her Vera Bradley wallet. Seconds later the front door slammed. Selenia stomped into Lililana’s room and hurled her bag onto the floor. Lililana stood in silence because she knew when her sister was in a rage it is best to stay silent and listen to her vent.

“You will not believe what happened to me at drama club today. Luke Erickson is going to be Paris in Romeo and Juliet, and I have to marry him!” shouted Selenia. Lililana wasn’t sure whether or not to correct her, but she spoke up anyway.

“Um, Selenia, Juliet doesn’t end up marrying Paris.”

“Well of course I do! My Daddy Capulet is making me and I am not going to be a beggar!” Lililana just nodded her head in acceptance that no matter how many times she would say it, her sister would not understand that she doesn’t get to make up the play. Selenia went over to her sister’s dresser and began to glare at herself in the mirror. She never really admitted it, but Lililana thought she did this, so she could pretend that Monica was looking at her. The two sisters used to be very close, but after their mother died, they became Greenland and Iceland. Lililana coped by dreaming and thinking while Selenia dealed with her problems by throwing tantrums and dating every boy in the senior class (aside from Grener.) Selenia turned her attention back to Lililana and said,

“You feel like shopping sis?” Lililana was astonished! Selenia rarely asked her to do anything with her anymore. This was just the opportunity she was waiting for.

“Um, sure. That would be cool.” She responded.

“Excellent,” Selenia squealed, “meet me in my car in 5.” Lililana nodded in bafflement as her sister crossed the hall into her room. Lililana snatched up her wallet and sprinted to her sister’s hot pink BMW. The dress awaits!

The Prom: Chapter One

According to Lililana, all alarm clocks should be put in a large room, and bulldozed. How she missed her mother coming in her room, just two years ago, whispering with her sweet, sweet voice, “Breakfast is ready.”

Lililana forced herself out of bed onto the cold, hardwood floor. As she made her way to the minuscule bathroom that she shared with her fraternal twin, Selenia, she noticed the Bass Pro Shops catalog on the floor. Her dad once was a neat freak, but after his wife, Monica, died in a boating accident, it was like he was oblivious to the world. She took off her pajamas and got into the shower. She turned the bath knob and hot water rained down into the tub. She stood there for a moment, enjoying the downpour with it refreshing touched, letting it take her to a better place. She was gliding across the dance floor, her body melted into the arms of Grener Blue, her boyfriend. The world was a blur as the interlocked bodies moved round and round. They thought of nothing but each other until she heard someone rapping at the bathroom door. She quickly washed her hair and got out. Puddles formed on the floor as her hair dripped with the lukewarm liquid. She grabbed her hair dryer and twisted the door handle. Her sister pushed passed her leaving Lililana with a shivering face and sadness in her heart as the vision of Grener, faded away into the dreary March morning.

The Prom: Prologue

The glitter sparkled on her eyes as light flew from the sun down onto Earth. Her dress rustled as she twirled on the concrete walk in front of the school gym. Her heels clinked as she approached the door. Lililana Franchesco had thought of nothing but this night for a month, and even though all seemed to be going as it should, her life was about to fall apart.
